Self centered egoist with a hard edge he works very hard to conceal. Bad guy.
Whomever compared him to Jack Weinstein never appeared before Weinstein. He is the polar opposite.

My perspective is as a civil litigator and former federal law clerk. This is a great judge. Don't be fooled by the quiet demeanor, this man hits the bench prepared. He is fair and down the middle.

John Gleeson is a judges judge. He has a keen intellect, a firm grasp of the law and a unique ability to be both fair and firm at the same time. He conducts trial with an even handedness and intelligence that more judges should possess, but regrettably do not. A true giant of the law in his prime.

Nick, I have a civil and criminal case before Judge Gleeson. He has been very fair in both. He is extremely intelligent and does not put up with fools or BS. He was also the keynote speaker at the Waldorf at the IP convention with over 1,000 attorneys in attendance.I find it refreshing that a federal judge takes the bench without the black robe. It shows me he has no ego. I have listened to him hearing a variety of different and obssure federal cases and he appears to do his homework and asks counsel tough questions which shows that he does his homework, very impressive for a former federal prosecutor.

Desperate to get to the court of appeals, will do anything to get ink. A mean spirited person masquerading as even handed.Really smart but intellectually dishonest.

i tried a civil case in front of judge gleeson and found him to be the best trial judge i have appeared in front of. he follows the action carefully, thinks along with the lawyers and understands the objections made without the need for lengthy argument. he invariably gets the ruling right, even if he rules against you. his written opinions are well reasoned and also right on the money. would welcome to try another case in front of him anytime.

I presently have 2 cases pending before Judge Gleeson. one civil and one criminal. So far, he seems very fair.

No question he can be prickly but he's totally independent and fair-minded and willing -- unlike many other judges -- to take the government on and make new law -- even if the Second Circuit eventually reverses him. He upheld a defendant's right to post-conviction access to evidence for DNA testing in McKithen, struck down NYS's persistent felony offender law in Portalatin, wrote the 2d Cir. opinion in Triumph Capital reversing several counts for a discovery violation, granted the habeas in Policano v. Herbert, etc. His opinions are well researched, clearly written and scholarly

I was a juror on a recent criminal case involving gun possession. The jury failed to find the defendant guilty. I was impressed with how Judge Gleeson was impartial and bent over backwards to be fair to both parties. He was very patient with the entire process. If I was ever unfortunate enough to be in a position where I was on trial for a crime I would want someone like him to preside over the case.

As a student of talmudic law and having an interest in civil law, I was most impressed with the demeanor and intellegence of Judge Gleeson. His warmth and sincere concern come through in his communication with all participants. I wish him all success in his career.

Although he is sometimes less than willing to consider certain arguments, he tends to come to the right results - and, on occasion, to reverse himself.

Way, way too much attitude displayed for far, far too little reason. I appreciate judges who stick to the rules and demand that counsel do so as well, because predictability is a big part of justice. But why does he have to be high-handed and nasty about it?

Comments:
Too strong-willed and too much of a strong-arm judge, not to mention abusive of his Article III powers. Makes up his mind way too early and no amount of compelling evidence will change it. Not open-minded at all. Beyond his boy scout initial demeanor is one very mean-spirited, arrogant judge who chaffs at anyone who dares suggest a different view.

I was pro se in Judge Gleeson's Court on 12-18-07. Department of Education had me in a full-nelson. Judge Gleeson heard the case. He was sharp, smart, quick-witted, had a sense of humor, and didn't appear to suffer fools and foolishness gladly. He helped both myself and the courteous AUSA representing the DoED to reach a fair agreement. I am forever grateful to Judge Gleeson, his clerks, and the pro se office staff.

Comments:
Contrary to the opinions voiced in a recent critique, Judge Gleeson is exceedingly bright, innovative, independent and courageous. This is the guy who threw out a conviction on grounds of prosecutorial misconduct, suggesting that the AUSA had suborned perjury, and who held that the standard charge on the credibility of a defendant who testifies was unconstitutional because it instructed the jury to scrutinize his testimony with greater care than that of any other witness. He was a great prosecutor and is a great judge.

Self-righteous and makes up his mind way too quickly. Ambitious and self-promoting. Not at all open-minded and does not listen fairly to legal arguments. A very bad case of "robitis." Ego larger than courtroom. Just barely bright enough but not committed to using his modest intellect for justice. Is quite dismissive of the views of others. With these qualities he may very well make the 2nd Circuit.

Very smart even-handed judge who lets you try your case. He understands the difficulties one can have as a criminal defense attorney with a difficult client or tough case. He is fair on sentencing and has compassion where it is appropriate. Overall excellent judge and a good guy.

Was tough and had a distinct preference for the prosecutor. Rulings favored prosecution although he let me try my case for the most part. Doesn't interupt the flow with questions from the bench. Makes decisions quickly. A bit of a patrician additude.

Very fair on sentence.

Was expecting a far more adversarial judge. He's no Weinstein but he will do.

A terror as a prosecutor Judge Gleeson has exceeded expectations as a fair-minded, scholarly and thoughtful judge. But if you try to b.s. him, or are unprepared, you're dead meat. His natural instincts are prosecutorial, but he is as demanding of the government as of the defense, and has no qualms about ruling against the government. He can adopt a holier-than-thou attitude, but overall is a pleasure to appear before.
