Comments:
Doesn't get better than Judge Zagel. He's even-tempered, fair, brilliant, handles his courtroom deftly and with poise. Commands respect from both sides of the bench. Well-reasoned opinions. Sometimes late to his call, but he won't rush the parties and he's willing to stay late to get a trial done. Very fair.

On October 22, 2004, Judge Zagel put me in jail for "my writing." He said that I wasn't a real criminal in the true sense of the word, but he felt that the court needed to put me in jail for a short period of time to make an impression on me. I was scheduled to spend six months in the maximum security federal penetentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana for possession of a forged security. The purported forged security was a five-year-old business letter, with my signature on it. This was not criminal. This was not federal. This was and is strictly political. Judge Zagel "weaponized" his court. Good old boys just having fun!

Judge Zagel should be cloned because there are some idiot judges in the same court; I know this firsthand, unfortunately. Too bad all judges aren't this smart and willing to actually work instead of just whisking cases off their dockets and taking the easy way out.

Very smart judge, but his call can be incredibly slow, and it can take a very long time to get dispositive rulings, hearing dates or trial.

Makes up his mind too quickly about merits of case and then refuses to change course regardless of ensuing evidence. Courtroom may be most inefficient in the ND.
