He is too old to be practicing. He seems to be asleep most of his trials. He already treats the defendants as criminals, so how do you expect the jury not to be biased when the judge already acts in that way towards the defendant!! It is so scary that peoples lives are in this man's hands! How is this justice? AND he never looks at the evidence, everything is based on his opinion!

Most aggressive judge I have ever seen in imposing Rule 11 sanctions. Be careful. And 90 is a bit old to still be on a district court bench.

Unfortunately tried case by himself with no respect to either prosecutor or defense, prosecutor was happy though as Shadur is usually pro government. He should retire.

Unfortunately he may have been smart some time ago but now has difficulty handling complex cases. He generally follows the prosecutors lead and as long as they follow correct legal format will side with them almost universally. He should step down.

He abuses the power of the federal judiciary, but is sneaky enough to avoid it on the record so that an appeal would lie.

This judge knows all the tricks of frequent offender attorneys, and will not let them get away with it. He has an impressive knowledge of the law, and has read all of the pleadings/motions (he will even quote portions to counsel in support of his rulings). He is scary smart. I wish that more judges of the Northern District were as good as Judge Shadur!

Nothing is more sad than to see a once great man slowly erode into what is left now. A very strong caution to any litigant, beware.

I like Shadur. He has a good heart. He can be difficult, particularly over disagreements about interprations of case law - because he absolutely hates to be wrong. But overall, he is a very good judge.

Give the old lion his due. He's blazingly smart, so smart in fact that he can come up with a fancy legal justification for any position he's already decided is right.

But lawyers can lear a lot from him. Just put your ego aside, shut up and listen when he's instructing you on a point of practice, because he's usually quite right, and you can gain a great deal from just listening to him.

Pompous, yes. But also the one of the great trial lawyers of all time, I suspect.

Very pro-defense, to the point of being unfair to the prosecutor, every chance he gets. Case in point was his most recent sentencing of Edward Vrdolyak. The prosecutor never had a chance to make a point, before he got bashed by "King Milton." The only guy in court who didn't think Vrdolyak would do jail time was Judge Shadur. Even "Fast Eddie" was surprised when he got off! Judge Shadur is no friend to prosecutors and uses logic that no reasonable man would ever think of -- not because he's smart, but because he's just illogical, old and bull-headed. Prosecutors beware!

Is it true that Judge Shadur has more cases remanded from the 7th Circuit every year than any other judge? Why did we waste our time in law school when this moron makes up his own rules? Jefferson was right - there must be term limits for political favors. My client got a raw deal and Judge Shadur didn't care. How is it possible to decide every issue without reviewing evidence? The Circuit Court has admonished this old geezer way too many times. Kick him out!

Jefferson was right. Judge Shadur is a perfect example of why judges should not be granted lifetime positions. This guy is so old and tired that he no longer reviews evidence - as was clearly pointed out in several cases by the 7th Circuit.

Smart guy, no doubt about it. Fair? No way. Shadur decides your case at the first appearance. He then dips into his bag of judicial tricks (discretion, allegations taken as fact, doctrines du jour) to shove your case off his docket as quickly as possible. He truly doesn't give a damm if he is reversed. His will is his judgment. I know because we have reversed him every time. Time to send him out to pasture.

The man should retire as he is not important enough to be impeached by the Senate. The legal world has passed him by and his "stand-up" routine in the courtroom has grown as tired and as old as he. Very unfair and has a work overload that gives him little to no time to examine evidence. A disgrace to the bench!

In my fifteen years in practice, Judge Shadur is the best judge I've been in front of. He's one of the few judges who is actually the smartest guy in the room (rather than the legions of others who only think they are). Couple that with an inexhaustible work ethic and a tremendous -- and evenhanded -- grasp of the issues, and you'll begin to get an idea of what Judge Shadur brings to the table every time you're in front of him.

In am convinced that in a previous life Shadur was Yoda. He is scary smart, diligent and respectful. Because I am in private practice primarily representing defendants, conventional wisdom dictates that I should not like him. But I love drawing him because he will say things from the bench that will help control client expectations. Yes, he gives people the summary judgment speech but what people often forget is that he WILL grant summary judgment if there is a basis to do so. Indeed, some plaintiff's lawyers get completely lazy after drawing him because they assume that Shadur will never kick a case. That is simply not true. He does it all the time, but for the RIGHT reason and not to simply get rid of a case.

In a perfect world he would be sitting on the U. S. Supreme Court. We win because they made the mistake of leaving him on the district court so that average lawyers like me can learn from him. He is also the judge that other judges consult when hard questions need answers!!!

Judge Shadur is definitely one of the smartest federal judges in this country. I consider myself honored to have had the privilege to appear before him. That said, he clearly has one bias: he hates summary judgment motions. He will grant them, but only after giving you a speech about how lawyers don't understand the purpose of summary judgment, and frequently abuse the motion. He also tends to be very sympathetic to plaintiffs. But overall, he is very fair and I would have him as my district judge any day of the week.
