Judge Mahoney is an example to be held up to all Magistrate Judges in the country. He is bright, diligent, even-tempered, and respectful to litigant and counsel. He is going to retire at the end of 2012. He will be missed. I hope he has a hand in teaching his successor.

Magistrate Judge Mahoney, is a gem. Intelligent, cheerful, open-minded, professional, understanding and accommodating. He must have actually practiced law before ascending to the bench!.

He is very evenhanded with all who come before his, including pro se litigants.

In addition being a true gentleman, he is one of the fairest, most competent, most respectful and respected jurists in the Northern District.

If I would be stuck with one judge on all my cases, I'd be happy for it to be him!

I have had Judge Mahoney numerous times over the course of 6 years. He gives extensions, but that is often the set up for ultimate end game -- summary judgment or some other dispositive measure. He's fair, practical and often keeps civil cases under control and focused on the relevant discovery issues. I also like the fact that he routinely prohibits parties from taking 7 hour depositions (exceptions for plaintiffs and other named parties). For goodness sakes, 7 hours is a license to commit all kinds of chicanery. I would (and have) consented to him on numerous occasions. Better to have the guy who ruled on your discovery issues to also preside over your summary judgment motion and/or trial.

Have only been before Judge Mahoney in one case so far, in which he was too lenient on discovery issues (e.g., allowed plaintiff's numerous extensions and additional depositions at the eleventh hour). Judge Mahoney was better at managing Plaintiff's overbroad written discovery requests to third parties in the case, although he largely left it to counsel to agree on parameters in a Rule 37 conference (i.e., he should have taken a more active role in addressing the objections of the non-party respondents).
