What others have said about Hon. George C. Smith

Civil Litigation - Private

Comment #: 6242
Excellent settlement judge. Exceptionally personable and engaging. Involves and empowers his law clerks. Very conservative from a criminal standpoint as a former prosecutor, but under the right circumstances will suppress, downward depart, etc. Works very hard to be fair.

Comment #: 3578
Determined to follow the Government's lead in criminal cases, including sentencing and departure recommendations, unless defense
attorneys convince him that a conviction could be reversed. A case with a high profile in the media generally results in a harsher sentence. More evenhanded in civil litigation. Hires intelligent clerks willing to work hard on difficult legal issues. Sensitive to how his rulings will be received by the public.
