I have had three cases with Judge England and found him to be a very good judge in both temperament and administration of the case. I tried one of the cases to verdict and thought Judge England was excellent in trial. He does not take much oral argument in law and motion, except on motions in limine and final pretrial law and motion. His staff is also very friendly and helpful.

Political mover and shaker in Sacramento legal circles. Generally well liked by plaintiffs bar and defense bar. Conflicting opinions on trial demeanor. Almost enver takes oral argument, so make your written work count. Judge England had a limited civil practice before appointment to the bench and does not have a great grasp on civil procedure, which really shows in some of his rulings. Most frustrating aspect of practicing before Judge England is that he often takes contradictory postions from case to case, which is partcialry frustrating to members of the bar who rely on the doctrine of stare decisis to advise clients on early Rule 68 offers, dispositive motion tactics, and trial strategy. Judge England is as of late one of the most, if not the most, overruled member of the Eastern District. He is often criticized for his lack of punctuality, but it may be an unfair criticism given the caseload of the jduges on the Eastern District bench.

A very well liked member of the Eastern District bench. Biggest complaint is punctuality, as he remarkably slower to get work out than his peers. Almost never takes oral arguement, so make you written work count. Opinions are generally well written and reasoned.

I actually lost SJ before Judge England. Although I disagreed with his ruling and it is up on appeal, I found him to be very well-informed and prepared. He seemed calm and deliberate and to take his responsibilities seriously. Overall, a quality appointment.

Fair, polite, friendly to counsel, and just an all-around great American.

It would be great to see him elevated to the 9th Circuit. They need more folks like him.
