Generally, the limits are in the total amonut of time that the case gets delayed before trial, not how many individual delays there are.The speedy trial clause of the 6th Amendment prohibits a trial from being delayed too long after indictment/arraignment, without the consent of the accused. The threshold is 8 months, after which any further delays are presumed to be prejudicial to the defendant. But both sides can keep requesting continuances, and the judge can keep granting them. It's only when the trial has been delayed for 8 months or longer, after the defedant starts complaining, that the court must take action. Before that, it's based on mutual consent.

Comments:
An exceptional judge. Wrote an opinion that demonstrated that he took the time to understand the issues and the law. We could not have hoped for a better judge. Another example of why the Southern District is the district other districts, especially the Central District, should try to emulate. Furthermore, he was exceptionally fair to all sides. If you are in front of him, you are lucky - plaintiff or defendant.

He makes every effort to be even handed. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But he is very intellectual, and you will always get a chance to make your record.
