If she doesn't like your side of the case, that's it - you're screwed, and the law be damned. Very heavy handed, imperious with a mean streak.

Horrible horrible judge. She makes up her mind before the trial begins and her personal bias is displayed throughout the trial. As others have said she sentences based on allegations which were never even addressed in the trial.

Awful recent decision in the Silk Road case. 20 years would have served the purpose. 500,000 people a year in US die from prescribed psychotropics. 10 million people worldwide die from legal alcohol and tobacco each and every year worldwide. No doctor and no alcohol/tobacco pushers go to jail for life for knowngly killing people with complete disregard.

As someone who is familiar with the SDNY for 30 years I must say that it is a pleasure to have a judge who moves along at the speed that Forrest does. It would be nice however if she actually did the work. It's plain to see that she develops an early bias. Makes it a hell of a lot easier to dispense quick decisions when you don't have to do the work. Wonder what her clerks think? Litigants deserve both speed and justice. I would choose justice over speed any day! If you have a complex civil case before her be prepared for the RPM's of a roulette wheel. Regardless of your facts an law I am afraid you will have about as much chance of success. You can go into the hall and flip a coin with the other side. This would be advisable to your clients.

She is an outstanding jurist with great promise for a brilliant career as an appellate court judge. She is fair, and is always well-prepared. She is forthright and reasonable in all matters. Unlike many, she comes to the bench after an outstanding career as a trial lawyer.

I recognize the comments (and perception) that Judge Forrest is a harsh sentencing judge. This may perhaps be true in white collar cases. In other cases, though, Judge Forrest is fair and reasonable. She does not seek to impose excessive punishment on those who come from underprivileged or difficult upbringings and were unable to escape the negative pull of their surroundings. Instead, she looks for the good in those people, encourages them to turn their lives around, and seems genuinely understanding of the mitigating circumstances and hardships in their lives.

I will second what the last poster said. Judge Forrest does seem to be a good person with a decent judicial temperament, but she overestimates her ability to figure a case out on her own. She seems to rule from the gut without really researching, or even reviewing, the law. Look forward to bizarre opinions answering questions neither party raised, applying law that has no bearing on the case.

This Judge is nice enough but she needs to spend more time focusing on the law. Her opinions are erratic, unsound and too often wrong on the law.

Comments:
Judge Forrest may be a good judge for some kinds of cases, but in her relatively brief time on the bench she has demonstrated a hostility to plaintiffs in employment discrimination cases. Perhaps she will improve in this area over time, but it seems unlikely. If you draw her as a plaintiff's lawyer, you may want to give serious consideration to re-filing in state court without federal claims.

Comments:
Judge Forrest is smart and energetic. She has an excellent demeanor, is efficient and treats lawyers civilly. She is, as many have reported, a harsh sentencer -- she truly sees sentencing as a day of reckoning, a time for meting out just deserts. She is capable, however, of showing compassion to defendants who are deserving, although her idea of compassion may not jibe with others'. Also, she is generally pro-government when push comes to shove, and she sometimes will reflexively adopt the government's position on particularly complicated sentencing issues, rather than actually work them through. Hopefully as she gains more experience some of her views will moderate and she'll gain more perspective. She is already an excellent judge in many ways and she has the potential to be a truly great judge.

Very tough but fair judge. Excellent demeanor -- as good as any federal judge I've been before. I've had three cases before her in the past 8 months and while she is an incredibly tough sentencer she does the right thing at the end (whether you like it or not). Incredibly hard worker. All in all, just a very decent, kind, smart, tough but fair judge. I'd take all my cases before her if possible.
