Though he beat me out for the seat he now occupies, he seems to have turned out to be an outstanding choice for the job. A complete breath of fresh air compared to some of the other intellectual gorillas who occupy the federal bench in this district. Of course, I think I'd have been a better choice... ;) Still, he's working out very well.

Comments:
I have found Judge Smoak to be a brilliant jurist. His opinions are scholarly, well-researched, and well-written. He moves cases along efficiently and effectively, demonstrating the discipline expected of a West Point grad. Unlike most judges, Judge Smoak has had over 30 years of experience trying cases. Thus, he has an intuitive grasp of the law and understands the concerns of counsel. Before becoming a federal district judge, Judge Smoak received a pre-eminent rating by Martindale.
