This judge is OBVIOUSLY biased in the Manafort case. You don't see him arguing with the defense attorneys. Telling someone to not roll their eyes, etc. This just is a narcissist in the worst way and should NOT be involved in this case at all!

The definition of an activist judge. He is allowing his ego to interfere with his judgment. It is obvious that he has interests to preserve in this case. He is not impartial, he seems to think we should respect the Russian oligarchs as our betters. That Manafort's relationship with dictators and oligarchs is not germane to this case. He is a jackbooted thug running roughshod over American justice.

A man whose ideas and time has over extended their want.

Will he allow treason to keep his political friends in power?

Will he face the "Me Too" walk of shame?Time will tell in each instance. Time we cannot afford to be wasted.

Judge Ellis should remove himself if he doesn't want to do his job. He wants to hurry the Manafort trial along not taking into consideration that this trial is serious and this man's life is important. I'm no fan of Manafort because I think he is guilty. Instead of being petty Judge Ellis should take a look at how president Trump is tampering with the jury and interfering in a trial. I'm sure this is a crime yet the Judge is doing nothing. Why won't he sequester the jury or order the president to shut up? If he does nothing he should step down immediately.

This judge shows bias every time he opens his mouth. If you don’t take treason seriously,
recuse yourself. You should be impeached.

Agree with all other comments. Ellis should have stepped down years ago or been impeached himself. He is antagonistic and adversarial, especially along party lines making a point in one trial to bring up he was appointed by Reagan. It is time for him to step down.

This guy is clearly a delusional Trump Supporter. Why bring up Trump and state Mueller is attempting impeachment (which only congress has the ability to do) in Manafort's trial?

This judge showed his hand. He must recuse himself from this case.

As a criminal defense attorney for nearly 40 years, I have been appalled at the lack of ethics and jack-booted tactics of Robert Mueller's team and the ignoring of basic Constitutional law and legal ethics. This country exists only because of Constitution and rule of law - the special Counsel has stomped it and ground it into the dirt for too long. I am proud that Judge Ellis is standing up for Lady Justice by seeing the abuses that have been taken place. I was a Democrat, and have been a Democratic candidate for office. I have resigned from the the Democratic party and am ashamed for having been associated with it. It has lost its way totally and completely, resorting to abuse of power to try to remain in power. As far as I am concerned, the appointment of the Special Counsel in the manner it was is one of the biggest embarrassments in American jurisprudence. My former Democrat colleagues who have been a part of this fiasco should be remember the adage, 'those who live by the sword shall die by the sword' as it appears its sharp edge has turned and they have set the precedence to have it visited upon them ten-fold.

U.S. Senior Judge T.S. Ellis II, as a concerned citizen of the US, I demand that a fair trail is held without consideration to political party lines as our Constitution states. Your attack against Robert Mueller’s team and your noted support for Donald Trump have crossed the line. You are well aware of the dishonesty and illegal practices of those working with and for Donald Trump. You are also aware of the lies and legal issues conducted by President Trump and his administration with the facts that provided multiple times each day. You sir, are to work for the country not party-lines or favor individuals. I give you notice, as I am entitled to as a citizen of the country I love the US. Sincerely Mona Worsham

Based on what this Judge did in court today and the way in which he became adversarial with the prosecution team was on more of a personal note than proper and reasonable adjudication while in a court setting. It is my firm belief the Federal Judge T.S. Eliis lll should RECUSE himself from any further federal legal proceeding as it's clear he has a bias toward the Special US Prosecutor Office along political lines and has miserably failed in show his ability to provide impartial evaluation in this or any other future pretrial hearings. If he cannot enforce the spirit and proper respect of the rule of law in a court room setting. Nor show proper court decorum while presiding on the bench. Then it's vehemently clear that he needs to step down and let another Judge proceed.

Judge Ellis, like all judges, is supposed to be a neutral arbitrator between the prosecution and the defense. His comments, or rather his biased personal opinions, in court today (May 4, 2018) in relation to Paul Manafort and the Mueller investigation were completely inappropriate and unprofessional. He had not even read the document from Rod Rosenstein which addresses the scope of the Mueller investigation. An elderly and biased Republican judge should no longer be on the bench.

Ill-informed as to what constitutes historically documented non-vanilla sexuality. Aware of *Lawrence* but ruled that it does not affirm a fundamental liberty of choice in consensual sexual conduct (Doe v. Rector & Visitors of George Mason Univ.), saying that BDSM lacks a history -- a parochial and ignorant misstatement of the actual precedent for such conduct. Of course, plaintiff misbehaved badly according to the standards of the BDSM community but deciding which party to a dispute is right and then constructing a reason for doing so ex post facto, while long accepted practice in rabbinical courts, seems wonky jurisprudence in a secular state. That his argument in Doe rests substantially on his citation of a Scalia dissent renders it particularly odious. Doe may have been a bad hat who egregiously violated the culture of his school, but he was entitled to due process all the same, and Judge Ellis, in gratuitously injecting his ill-informed fantasies about BDSM into the proceedings, seems to have indulged in the very sort of judicial activism" his fellow right-of-center jurists are do fond of decrying in their liberal colleagues, even as he overlooked possible lines of argument that might have produced a just remedy without resorting to establishing flawed precedent that will only have to be repaired later. Granted, there must always be someone who is the smartest man in the room unless one has a room entirely filled with clones; but if so, one must expect that man to have done his homework, which Judge Ellis clearly failed to do here. Perhaps it is time for him to collect his gold watch and go fly his beloved aeroplanes instead.

In granting an injunction against Operation Rescue's peaceful abortion business blockades, he described the lawsuit as "a simple trespass case, only modestly complicated by an unsettled question of federal law." He got reversed on that unsettled question when we sought review at the Supreme Court. But I never felt him to be mean-spirited, ungentlemanly or unfair.

He makes up his mind based on purported facts represented to him by one side and then crafts an opinion to support that result, rather than have the result flow from supported facts and applicable precedent.

the worst and most abusive judge i have seen in 30 years of practice. i have practiced in 20 states state and federal and i have never seen anything like it. it was intentional and mean spirited. he abused lawyers and experts, always on the plaintiff side. his conduct was inexcusable. he is not the smartest person in the room though at 5 feet and change he is still the biggest bully i have ever seen.

He is convinced that he is the smartest man in the room. Therefore, he stops listening once he has made up his mind. While Judge Ellis is very smart, he is not near as smart as he thinks he is.

Extremely intelligent -- brilliant, perhaps. Unfortunately, he ends up being an extra prosecutor. Cannot believe he was ever a defense attorney as he claims. Wish he was not so arrogant and pro-government. It is bad for defendants, as it does not make the government work at all. Thus one of the main reasons the quality of EDVA AUSAs is so low.

When Friday motion day comes in his courtroom, it is obvious that Judge Ellis is the smartest man in the room. Unfortunately, he will frequently make it plain that he knows he's the smartest man in the room, and act accordingly. Few judges have his encyclopedic knowledge of case law, and fewer still will show his level of familiarity with the pleadings you submit to him - so you can't usually slip a fast one by him. The fact that he is so very bright and quick, however, can sometimes be a drawback when he mercilessly interrogates one of our less-skilled litigating brethren. I have found him to be relatively even-handed when dealing with private litigants, but when the government is involved he shows a definite pro-government inclination. This is one judge you want to avoid angering, because his temper can sometimes be volcanic. However, he seems to not hold a permanent grudge if you set him off, assuming that you show a respectful level of groveling.

Can be arrogant and demeaning if he doesn't know you; gets complex rulings right but loves to show off his deep belief in himself. He will read your brief and won't accept bad citations. If you catch him on a rare day good-mood-wise, consider yourself lucky.
