He incarcerated a juvenile just because he was pissed at someone a decision later overturned.

He is prone to having tantrums rather than rendering fair and impartial judgments. I've a feeling he is being encouraged to retire five years early.

I have known and practiced before Judge Hawley since he went on the bench. I have tried complicated civil matters including construction defect, fraud, conversion and breach of contract cases with him. He is able to handle complex civil cases, is actively involved with settlement, is proactive on alternative dispute resolution including summary jury trials and is an excellent trial judge. In my opinion he has only two potential shortcomings depending on one's viewpoint. One is that he lets people talk too long at uniform motion calendar hearings. Of course this is a shortcoming only if you are waiting for your hearing, not if you are arguing your motion. The other is that he takes a very long time to get written opinions out for nonjury matters and extended hearings on motions for summary judgment. The flipside is that his opinions are lengthy, well-reasoned, supported by testimony and case law and thus, highly unlikely to be reversed on appeal.
